ABOUT ME

NICOLA WILLS 

 

CHOREOGRAPHER + MOVEMENT DIRECTION

 

Australian and Belgian Citizen  

Australian-born, Nicola started her professional dancing career with Queensland Ballet in 2010. Moving to Europe in 2012, Nicola danced briefly with Dortmund Ballet before moving to the Ballet Vlaanderen (formally known Royal Ballet of Flanders) in 2013. 

​

Nicola has worked in a broad spectrum of full length classical ballet repertoire, as well as creations and set repertoire from renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Crystal Pite, Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkoui, Jiri Kylian, Pina Bausch, Anne-Theresa de Keersmaker,  Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Wayne McGregor, Andonis Fondiadakis, Johan Inger and many more.

She worked as a choreographic collaborative assistance to Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for the Golden Globe featured film 'Girl' (2016) and also 'Radioactive' (2018).

​

Since 2014 She has created 7 works for the company's in-house choreographic series 'Choreolab' as well as exploring movement direction through her two short films "The Vital Escape Up (2019) and 'Familiar' (2021). 

​

In 2020 her piece 'The Glass Ceiling' was chosen as a finalist for the Hannover 35th Choreographic competition, winning the National Youth Ballet of Hamburg Commission Prize. 

​

'The Glass Ceiling' also earned her a mention in Dance Europe's 2021 Critics Choice awards as a 'Talent to Watch' by Gerard Davis.

​

In 2021 She was chosen as the winner of the Ballet-X choreographic fellowship program, but due to scheduling difficulties was unable to fulfil the position. 

​

Nicola is currently undertaking a part-time Bachelor in Psychology at the University of South Australia to supplement her ambition to create choreographic work that explores and represents the mind and themes of human condition in a relatable context. Her aim is to create work where emotions speak through the body and create an empathetic experience for the audience. 

​

IN 2023: Nicola made a new full-length work 'The Exist List' under the Eleo Pomare–Glen Conner Choreographic Residency at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, US. Her work 'Somniloquy' was commissioned for the Gent Classical music festival in Gent, Belgium. Her piece 'Two People in Love Never Shake Hands' was selected as a semi-finalist in the 37th Hannover Choreographic competition and was performed in the Une Mare di Danza Gala in in Genoa, Italy. 

​

WHATS NEXT? In 2024 Nicola will be following through with the Ballet X Choreographic Fellowship in Philadelphia, US and will be representing the Ballet van Vlaanderen in the Royal Opera House International Draftworks Festival in London.
